Types of Retainers

Removable retainers (Hawley or clear plastic) allow easy cleaning and periodic wear adjustment. Fixed retainers are thin wires bonded behind front teeth for constant retention. Many patients use both: fixed lower retainer with removable upper, or full-time removables transitioning to nighttime-only wear.

Wearing Schedule

Initially, wear removable retainers full-time (20+ hours daily) for several months. Gradually reduce to nighttime wear as directed. Missing a few nights occasionally is usually fine, but consistency matters.

Caring for Your Retainer

Clean removable retainers daily with a soft toothbrush and mild soap—not toothpaste, which can scratch. Soak occasionally in denture cleaner.
