Understanding Medication Side Effects
Many common medications have oral side effects that can impact dental health. At FB Dental Yarrabilba, we review your medication list at each visit to anticipate and manage these effects proactively.
Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)
Hundreds of medications cause dry mouth, including antihistamines, decongestants, antidepressants, blood pressure medications, and pain relievers. Without adequate saliva, cavity risk increases dramatically. Combat dry mouth by sipping water frequently, using sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva, and considering saliva substitute products.
Gum Overgrowth
Certain medications cause gum tissue to enlarge (gingival hyperplasia). Calcium channel blockers (for heart conditions), anti-seizure medications (phenytoin), and immunosuppressants are common culprits. Meticulous oral hygiene helps manage this side effect. Severe cases may require surgical gum treatment.
Bleeding Gums
Blood thinners (aspirin, warfarin, newer anticoagulants) increase bleeding tendency, including during brushing, flossing, and dental procedures. Inform us about all blood-thinning medications. We'll take appropriate precautions during treatment and advise on bleeding management at home.
Tooth Discolouration
Some antibiotics, particularly tetracycline given to children, can permanently stain developing teeth. Chlorhexidine mouthwash causes surface staining. Iron supplements in liquid form may darken teeth. Professional cleaning or whitening can often address surface staining.
What You Should Do
Always inform FB Dental about all medications, including supplements. Don't stop medications without medical advice—we work around side effects. Maintain excellent oral hygiene to minimise medication-related risks. Attend regular check-ups for early problem detection.
